Who Is Microgaming?
Microgaming was founded in 1994 in Douglas, Isle of Man, and is widely credited with releasing the first true online casino software, predating competitors like NetEnt and Playtech. Over its history it held licences including the Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission, the UK Gambling Commission, the Malta Gaming Authority and the Alderney Gambling Control Commission, and it co-founded eCOGRA, the independent fair-play testing body, in 2003. In May 2022, Microgaming sold its entire games portfolio, back catalogue and distribution business to Games Global; the original corporate entity has since moved into casino platform technology rather than game development, and no longer releases new slots. Microgaming's brand and existing game library now sit under Games Global's stewardship.
What Made Microgaming Distinctive
Beyond being first to market, Microgaming pioneered progressive jackpot networks at scale — most notably Mega Moolah, launched in 2006, which holds a Guinness World Record for the largest online slot jackpot payout and has produced more real-money millionaires than any other online slot network. Its successor network, WowPot, continues to run under Games Global today.
Notable Titles
Mega Moolah remains the brand's defining title, its African-safari theme built entirely around its four-tier jackpot. Thunderstruck II and Immortal Romance are the two other titles most closely associated with the Microgaming name, both later extended into spin-offs and alternate formats that still carry the original branding.
