Who Is NetEnt?
NetEnt (NetEntertainment) was founded in Sweden in 1996, making it one of the earliest studios dedicated to online casino games. In 2020, Swedish live-casino group Evolution Gaming Group AB agreed to acquire NetEnt, with the deal completing on 1 December 2020. NetEnt now operates as one of Evolution's slot-focused studio brands, with its live casino division discontinued post-acquisition in favour of a pure slots focus.
What Makes NetEnt Distinctive
NetEnt built its reputation on high-production-value video slots at a time when much of the market was still built around simpler reel games. It's widely credited with popularising the Avalanche mechanic — cascading wins where symbols explode after a payout and new ones drop in to potentially chain further wins on the same spin, first used in Gonzo's Quest. The studio has also leaned on licensed and branded content, including tie-ins with Vikings, Narcos and Jumanji.
Notable Titles
Starburst, released in 2012, is NetEnt's signature title and one of the most-played online slots ever made, built around a simple gem-matching design with expanding wilds. Gonzo's Quest introduced the Avalanche mechanic in 2011. Dead or Alive is a high-volatility Wild West slot known for very high maximum win potential in its sequel, and Finn and the Swirly Spin uses an unusual circular reel layout rather than the standard grid.
